UT Austin Cost of Attendance (COA)
A school's cost of attendance figures can help in financial planning for
your education by providing an estimate
of what it costs to attend a specific school for a year. When awarding
financial aid, schools must take this cost of attendance into account.
Federal, state and institutional aid awarded to a student cannot exceed
a school's cost of attendance. In determining this average cost for
financial aid purposes, our office must use an average cost of attendance
approved by The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
The official cost of attendance includes:
- Tuition and Fees
Due to the sheer number of students, UT-Austin estimates the tuition and fees for our students for financial aid purposes. The actual costs that a student incurs will vary depending upon the classes and program. Please visit the Office of Accounting's Tuition and Fee Rates page to learn more about actual tuition and fee rates. - Room and Board
The room and board component of the cost of attendance is assessed whether you live on-campus, off-campus, or commute from home. The numbers that we use are reasonable estimates of what it would cost you to live in Austin while you attend school. Your actual costs may vary from our estimates. We assume a roommate in the on- or off-campus budget. It is your choice where you live and if you choose to have a roommate, but our office will not increase your budget based on your choices unless there are unusual circumstances for which you successfully appeal. - Books and Supplies
Books and supplies are also included in the cost of attendance. Costs are estimated using information from local bookstores. - Transportation
The transportation allowance is for a student to get to campus, not to maintain a vehicle. University shuttles and the Austin city buses transport students around campus and Austin for free. - Miscellaneous Expenses
The miscellaneous part of the cost of attendance is for personal expenses. Actual expenses will vary.
Your individual budget for the year will vary according to:
- Number of credit hours
- Residency
- Room and board choices
- Degree plan
- Personal expenses
