Study Abroad
Students may receive aid for study abroad programs if the program is approved
through the UT Austin Center for Global Educational
Opportunities (C-GEO). If
interested in going abroad and receiving financial aid for your program,
a FAFSA
should be completed for the appropriate semester. In
order to receive your aid on time, you should apply at least three to four
months prior to your expected date of departure, or earlier if you also want
financial aid for other semesters during the academic year. The following
are deadlines for filing your FAFSA and expecting to receive your aid on
time:
| Summer Study Abroad Program | April 1 |
| Fall Study Abroad Program | May 1 |
| Fall/Spring Study Abroad Program | May 1 |
| Spring Study Abroad Program | October 1 |
The C-GEO will send our office the estimated cost for your program. We will
revise your financial aid awards for your increased budget and send you a
financial aid notification. Students going abroad are not eligible for
additional grant funding from OSFS. Most study abroad students are offered
additional loans.
You must complete Study Abroad Counseling and Financial Aid Counseling
before your aid will release. Some important things to keep in mind as
you prepare to go abroad are:
- Be sure to complete all requirements before you leave on your program to ensure your aid releases on time
- Your aid will release around the time classes begin at UT Austin
- Emergency loans to assist students in paying for deposits or airline tickets are not available for students going abroad
- Financial aid paper checks are mailed to the stateside contact
