Fellowships
Overview
Fellowships are a source of aid that can affect the amount of financial
aid you receive from the Office of Student Financial Services. In most
cases, the effect will be a dollar for dollar adjustment. The Financial
Aid Notification is the appropriate place to report fellowships, although
you may send out office a notification of your fellowship at any time.
Please keep in mind that reporting your Fellowship as soon as you know
about it will help prevent delays in the release of your financial aid.
What is a fellowship and how do I get one?
University fellowships, which are administered through the Graduate School,
are awarded to both new and continuing graduate students in most academic
areas. Students must be nominated by their graduate advisers for any fellowship
administered by the Graduate School. Additional information on University
fellowships is published by the Office of Graduate Studies.
University fellowships for entering graduate students are awarded on the
basis of scholastic excellence and adequate preparation for graduate study
in the student's chosen field, as shown by his or her academic record and
letters of recommendation. University fellowships for continuing students
are awarded on the basis of the student's record since entering the Graduate
School, including performance in relevant coursework and research or creative
activity, letters of recommendation from University faculty members, and the
endorsement of the graduate adviser; financial need is also considered. There
are additional specific qualifications for many of the competitive fellowships
awarded by the University and by graduate programs.
Generally, fellowships require no service from the recipient. Some fellowships
provide for payment of tuition and required fees in addition to the stipend.
How do they affect financial aid?
A fellowship, much like a scholarship, affects your total eligibility for aid.
At the start of the awarding process, your total cost of education is determined.
Next, we subtract any fellowships/scholarships/additional resources from this
amount. The remaining balance represents your total eligibility for financial aid.
It is possible for graduate students to receive a fellowship after financial aid
funds have been accepted and/or released. Financial aid must be re-evaluated
whenever a fellowship is awarded, even if you have already accepted/received awards.
Notification of aid revision
Whenever aid is revised, notification will be made either by e-mail or by a
revised financial aid notification. On the revised financial aid notification,
the fellowship will be listed under "additional resources." In the event
that you do receive a revised financial aid notification, you will have to
re-confirm your award choices and submit the notification.
