What is a Non-UT Scholarship?
  • A Non-UT Scholarship may also be referred to as a private or an outside scholarship.
  • These awards are typically earned after submitting an application and/or essay to a donor not affiliated with UT Austin.
  • Federal law requires you to report your non-UT Scholarships to the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS). Students will be notified if their Non-UT Scholarship causes a revision to their financial aid. (For more information, see How Scholarships/Fellowships Affect Financial Aid.)

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Non-UT Scholarships:

How are Non-UT Scholarships processed?
  • The majority of these scholarships are disbursed through OSFS. In most cases, scholarship donors will send a check directly to OSFS for processing.

My Check is Made Payable to UT Austin or Co-Payable to Me AND UT Austin — How will it be processed?
  • Write your UT EID on the face of the check and endorse* (sign) the back of it.
*Failure to do so will delay the processing of your check until you can visit our office to sign it in person.
  • Forward it immediately (either in person or by mail) to OSFS.
    • In Person: Hand your check directly to a financial aid counselor at the front counter in our office.
    • By Mail:
         Attention: General Accounting
         Office of Student Financial Services
The University of Texas at Austin
         P.O. Box 7758, UT Station
         Austin, TX 78713-7758
  • If a revision of your financial aid is needed, you will be sent a new Electronic Financial Aid Notification (E-FAN) to complete.

My Check is Made Payable to Me Only — How will it be processed?
  • If a donor sends a scholarship check directly to you and it is payable to you only, you do not need to send it to OSFS for endorsement.
  • If you decide to turn in your check, write your UT EID clearly on the face of the check and endorse* (sign) the back of it.
*Failure to do so will delay the processing of your check until you can visit our office to sign it in person.
  • Any amount owed directly to the University, like tuition, room and board, bars, and fines, will be deducted or paid.
  • The difference, if any, will be either direct deposited into your bank account or mailed to your local address.
  • Important! Although we do not require you to forward your check to OSFS, you are still responsible for reporting receipt of your scholarship to our office.

Can I pay my Tuition and Fee Bill with my Non-UT Scholarship?
Tuition and Fee bills may only be paid by Non-UT Scholarships if:
  • The scholarship combined with other available financial aid will cover your entire bill
  • AND
  • OSFS has received the Non-UT Scholarship check and the check has been posted to your financial aid awards.
Look for the "Pay with Financial Aid" button on the My Tuition Bill page to determine if you are able to pay your bill with your Non-UT Scholarship.

If my Tuition and Fee Bill is paid before my Non-UT Scholarship check is processed will I be reimbursed?
Before disbursing funds, OSFS will apply your check to your outstanding UT debt (tuition, on-campus housing). If you have no outstanding debt, OSFS will either issue you a paper check or, if you have designated a bank with Student Accounts Receivable, by direct deposit.

My Donor Requests Proof of Enrollment — How do I obtain that Information?
Some private donors may want to verify your enrollment at UT Austin prior to releasing your check.
