Types of Work-Study Jobs
The majority of Work-Study jobs are located on-campus. Every department
on campus is approved to hire Work-Study students, so there are a wide
range of jobs available. There are many clerical positions, but students
may also find employment as a lab research assistant, computer lab proctor,
library assistant, food server, museum guide, child care worker, or usher
at public events, to name just a few possibilities.
There are a limited number of Work-Study jobs available off-campus, through
the Community Service Work-Study program. These jobs are offered by local
non-profit, governmental, and community-based organizations, such as the
Austin Independent School District, People’s Community Clinic, KLRU-TV,
Austin Children’s Museum, Literacy Austin, and the YMCA. A full listing
of approved off-campus employers may be found on the Hirealonghorn.org site.
All Work-Study jobs pay at least minimum wage, but most pay more. The
average hourly wage across campus is about $7.20.
