Student Employment: Tips on Finding a Job
Earn as you Learn: The key to success is creating a balance between school, life, and work.
On Campus:
- UT departments that hire student employees – libraries, UT academic departments and admin offices, RecSports, Division of Housing and Food Services, etc. Call and ask if there are openings for student positions.
- Where to find Job Postings – Hirealonghorn.org, The Daily Texan, bulletin boards in the The Texas Union, campus kiosks, department career sites, AccessUT.
Off Campus:
- Get an Early Start – Begin researching openings and completing job applications before the semester begins.
- Location, location, location – Look for a job that is accessible by walking, bike, or bus. (UT shuttles and city buses are FREE for all UT students.)

- Psychology Research through the UT Psychology Department
- Buy/Sell – almost new – clothes
- Garage Sale
- Selling textbooks, electronics, etc
Already have a job?
- Ask if you can work more hours or if you can cover for a co-worker.
- Ask your supervisor what you can be doing to make sure you’re on track to receive an increase in pay and when you can expect an evaluation that would lead to a raise.
- Bring your class schedule to your employer as soon as possible.
- Aim to work around 10-15 hours a week, so you can balance school, life and work.
